Bandanna Nostalgia

One of my favorite fabrics is the bandanna print. It's a homey fabric, unpretentious and cheerful. It reminds me of the days when we wrapped a kerchief about our heads when we cleaned house; or when we 'put up' our hair in bobby pins or big rollers, threw a kerchief over our head and went grocery shopping (I can't believe we did that!) Bandanna fabric is all about summer; old porches, and sitting on tattered vintage quilts in the back yard. I made this skirt last evening. I don't know what the folks on "What Not to Wear" might say about it; but it sure makes me feel happy when I'm wearing it!

I've been sewing since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. Mom taught me to sew on an old Singer treadle machine something like this one. I found this one at an antique store the week after Mom died. Funny thing is, the store was playing an old hymn called "The Great Speckled Bird" that day; one of the same songs we played at her funeral. The machine was marked down to $40; so I looked toward heaven; whispered a little 'thanks, Mom' and hauled it home.
My skirt of course, was sewn on a newer machine. But my thoughts are always with Mom whenever I sew.
(A note to those who might forbid the wearing of bandanna fabric because of that whole gang thing... "Hooey!" I'm a 53 year old country girl. I like it. I'll wear it!)
