Welcome friends...thanks for coming by. We're seeking beauty in all of creation... in our faith and our families; our art and our music; our crafts and kitchens, and even in our own backyard. We'll share a poem or a recipe, a picture or a memory; maybe a dream of how we wish our life could be. And though we acknowledge that the world can be harsh, we're keeping it pleasant in our little corner; endeavoring to keep the words from the Book of all Books: ...Whatsoever things are lovely; think on these things.

I so enjoy hearing from you...so leave me a comment; it'll make my day!

Grandma's a Little Cra-Cra

Grandson Dane challenged hubby and I to do the 'Winter Challenge.' For the uninitiated...the Winter Challenge is a dare to run into freezing cold water; and then, in turn, to challenge others to do the same. Grandpa and I were up for the challenge. After much deliberation we chose Lake Whatcom for the big event. Even though it's mountain fed, it's not as frigid as the freezing waters of the Puget Sound. And though it was tempting, we opted against some local ponds that would be warmer, but brackish and slimy.

To get to Lake Whatcom you must drive over gi-normous Alabama Hill. As we proceeded up the hill; I began having serious misgivings. All the way up (and over) that hill I was contemplating chickening-out. Should a 58-year-old grandmother of 13 really plunge headlong into a chilly lake? It was only 42 degrees outside. Would I get hypothermia? Would this be too a great shock for my pampered, heat-loving system? I tell you; I was really in a dither by the time we arrived at the lake.

Hubby went first while I video'd him. Seeing him come out of the water without turning blue gave me the courage I needed to take the plunge. I did it; folks; I really did it! Here's the link for proof!

How would I describe the experience?
Exhilarating!

Sometimes even Grandmas need to do something a little cra-cray!

Are you being nice or being kind?

"Always be kind. But think twice before you're "nice." Nice, is often a mask of pleasantness we put over negative feelings. Nice is often a form of self-rejection. Real kindness feels good. It's when we give because we want to give and we give in ways that respect everyone, including us."

Tama J. Kieves

Wow! I read this quote on Tama Kieves' website and it really made me think. We're told to be nice so often; but really we need to be kind, don't we? You can link to her site here:

Simple Woman's Daybook

Here's my Simple Woman's Daybook; hosted by Peggy Hostetler. You can visit Peggy's blog at http://thesimplewomansdaybook.blogspot.com/ where you too can participate in the Daybook! Thank you Peggy!

FOR TODAY

Outside my window: Newly potted tangerine orange tuberous begonias and yellow daylilies. Bought them yesterday at the Hi-Hoe Nursery; a local favorite of mine. The pic is from their facebook...I just wanted to give you a visual on the color of those begonias!

I am thinking: About how I will spend my days this week, as my kitchen floor is being tiled. (No kitchen for 1 week...hmmm)

I am thankful: For a new-found friend, Stephanie. We met at the dog park...her dog Sasha and my Baron are best-buddies. We were chatting about gardening and she offered me some beanpoles from her family farm...and we'd just met! How kind she is!

In the kitchen: We've remove all of the appliances for the tile installer. Not much happening out there.

I am wearing: blue denim capris, a blue and white striped boat-neck t-shirt with 3/4 length sleeves, orange flip flops.

I am creating: I'm trying to figure out how to make a row of paper lanterns as shown in the picture below. I know you can get multi-socket light cords...this must be the secret. Isn't it beautiful? Any hints on how to replicate this?

I am going: Over to my community garden plot tomorrow...to put in the beanpoles Stephanie gave to me.

I am wondering: If I'll be able to get some writing (my book), and good photographs done this week with the workmen tramping about the house.

I am reading: "Excuses Begone!" by Dr. Wayne Dyer.

I am hoping: To figure out how to use my camera tripod before the 4th of July. I understand it is a necessity for fireworks shots.

I am learning: How to govern my thought life.

Around the house: The stove is in the family room; the fridge and microwave in the dining room; my dining room table is covered with boxes of things we might need while the kitchen is out of commission...food, dishes, cooking supplies, etc. Hubby's watching more golf...it's been on all weekend; Baron is napping--whimpering and twitching in his sleep--I think he's dreaming about that pretty little Silver Lab that visited our house yesterday! Posie-cat is quite alarmed by fireworks going off in the neighborhood.

I am pondering: How the Lord shows his goodness in my life in the small things; like the beanpole thing...

A favorite quote for the day: Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him...

One of my favorite things: Shopping for fresh fruit at the Green Barn produce market. I love the colorful variety of fruits and veggies; bouquets of flowers that invariably have sunflowers in them; milk and eggs from local farms; and the old-time country music playing in the background.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Pole the beans, replant some hosta, work on my book, exercise, pray and meditate, buy some daisies for my new iris and daisy flowerbed,  call my sis, find a farm to take some photographs of cows, stake my tomato plants.

A peek into my day: Went to church--stayed after for tea and made some new acquaintances, fixed leftover tacos for lunch, did all of my laundry because the laundry room is also being re-tiled and the washer/dryer are now in the garage, planted begonias, lilies, and heucheras. Moved some hosta and iris. Took Baron to the dog park for a romp with Sasha the great dane/boxer mix and Oso the german shepherd. Went through McDonald's drive-through for a chicken ranch salad for dinner. Not bad! Then home to move all of the kitchen appliance out and clean the filthy floors where they once stood. Blogged...obviously!

A Woman I Know in Saudi Arabia

I know...I'm supposed to be incommunicado. Shhhh, don't tell, but I had to sneak on to tell you about something quite incredible. There's this woman I know...she's actually a very good friend and neighbor to my sister in law. We've met several times at family gatherings. Janine is the nicest person; just the type of gal you want to sit next to at a party where you don't know anybody. She has a sweet smile and is so interested in everyone around her. Well anyway, my hubby texted me to tell me that Janine has gone off to Saudi Arabia to teach English for a year; and that she has a fascinating blog describing this mid-life adventure. If you want a first hand view of what it might be like to be a woman in Saudi, you really need to visit her blog. I'm giving you the link to one of my favorite posts. And I bet she'd love to hear from you...it must be very lonely there for her; so far from family.

Swanky Shoes

So have you seen the clogs at The Swanx? Hand-painted works of art for your feet! Love it!!!! Admittedly, they're a little pricey, but oohh-la-la! How cute would any of these little numbers be with a simple black skirt with tights and a white blouse? Or how about with your faded old jeans and a black t-shirt. There are so many to choose from; and I read that you can have them customized. How cool is that? These are a few of my favorites. Here's the link if you're interested...http://www.theswanx.com/

Peace Out, Man!

My Kitchen's All Sparkly...Thanks FlyLady!

We have about a foot of snow. It's 11 degrees and the Northeast Wind is biting cold. I need to take a break from taking a break! There's a marvelous site called FlyLady  http://flylady.net/  that I've been visiting. FlyLady helps you get your house (and life) in order.

We're planning a kitchen remodel in the near future, so I've gotten a little slack about cleaning it. But the FlyLady advises not to do a remodel until you de-clutter. Good advice, FlyLady!

So I spent my snow day sprucing up the kitchen.

I scrubbed the cupboards and counters.

Cleaned the canisters.

Organized the cookbooks. (I've decided to have a special shelf made just for cookbooks when we remodel.) I know you can go on line or get little computers for recipes, but I love my cookbooks! This stack is only of few in my collection.

The first goal FlyLady gives you is to shine the kitchen sink and to keep it that way. I've been shinin' the sink for a couple of weeks now.  A shiny sink makes you feel so good! This is a habit I'll keep. Not shining the sink is like not brushing your teeth!

The basket next to the coffee pot holds mail that I haven't dealt with. I'd rather not have it there, but it beats having junk lying around on the counters.

Good thing that ivy topiary is fake. I had enough dust on top of the fridge for cuttings to take root! Yuk!

My kitchen's sparkling clean. And even though it's old, it's pleasant.  Thanks for the inspiration, FlyLady!

(Yes, we're still going to remodel. I'll keep y'all posted!)

Playing Dress-Up At 50-Something

Gorgeous! From Peregrine UK. Flattering collar, a-symmetrical line is nice for larger women, yet it's not baggy. Big buttons are like jewelry.

I love fashion, but I've been feeling fashion-challenged for a while. It's been hard for me to get used to today's styles. The layered, lowered, non-matchy, thrown together look is simply not what I learned from mom. Back in the day you never let your underwear show, always wore solid color bottoms with printed tops (with the exception of plaid skirts), you wore dressy shoes with dresses and casual shoes with jeans. My 40 and 50-something coworkers seem to be able to pull off the dresses-over-leggings-with ballet slippers-look, but when I try I feel silly...like an older woman trying to look like a teenager. How revolting!  So I always revert to my old standard...taylored blouses over jeans with loafers. Boring!!!

But after reading this article http://afemmeduncertainage.blogspot.com/2011/08/dressing-up-working-chez-vous.html in A Femme d'Uncertain Age, I decided that it's high time I pull myself together and join this decade; fashionably speaking. I visited this site http://www.fashionafter50.com/ and took the fashion archetype quiz. (You know I can't do anything without turning it into a research project!) Having determined that my style is somewhere between classic and sporty, with a hint of bohemian, I went shopping in my own closet for some new outfits. There were more nice things in my wardrobe than I imagined...they were just crammed between stuff I hate (because it's too small, doesn't fit, or was a hasty, stupid purchase.)

I spent a Saturday morning trying different combinations from what I already owned and came up with a very nice wardrobe, if I do say so myself!

Here's the process I followed:

1. Figure out what style you are. I found the quiz in the Fashion After 50 website very helpful in determining what I like and why.

2. Get rid of everything in your closet that you hate. Doesn't matter why. Face it. If you don't like it you're never going to wear it again; and if you do, you'll feel like a schmuck. Like that shiny gold blouse I bought for Christmas 3 years ago. After seeing a photo of myself in that shirt, I never wore it again. I looked like a big shiny mylar balloon in that blouse. Fly away, mylar-balloon shirt!!! If you like it but it doesn't fit, put it in a box marked 'too big', or 'too small'.  And NO! You can't wear a blouse or jacket that's too small opened with a t-shirt under it. It'll feel like a straight-jacket. Geez, would you make your kids wear stuff that's too small? I thought not.

3. Now look at what is left. Start trying on slacks and skirts with different tops. Look at yourself in a full length mirror. Note what looks good together. Add jackets or sweaters. Try camisoles under low cut tops. For myself, I soon discovered that I look best in solid colors with a printed scarf or interesting jewelry. If I wear a printed top, it usually needs to be layered under a nice solid-colored jacket or sweater. I found that my beloved calico shirts look great under jeans jackets. It's especially flattering (with my added girth) to have the shirt drop well below the jeans jacket waistline, covering the fullest part of my hips.  Be sure to try different shoes and boots with each outfit.

4. Try your t-shirts under jackets or sweaters. I discovered that the most versatile piece of clothing in my closet is a $7 scoop-necked black t-shirt. It is dynamite under a classic white blouse with some silver jewelry!  It looks equally great under jackets and sweaters and is the perfect backdrop for almost any jewelry or scarf. While we're talking about t-shirts, remember that it's nice to have a snug camisole to wear beneath them. It helps to keep those muffin tops from spilling over the waistline of your jeans. (I know some gals wear 'body-shapers'. I refuse. A girdle by any other name is still a girdle in my book! I'd rather face the facts and shed some excess weight than to squeeze my torso into an 'ace bandage'. Had enough of that in the 1970's. But that's just me. To each her own.) The cami will also conceal cleavage in today's low cut t-shirts... if you're like me and prefer to keep 'the girls' covered up.
Do I need to mention that low-rider jeans on anybody past 30 are just wrong? Bad, bad, bad. I once arrived to a community college class late. Most of the seats were filled with young women.  Walking into that room from behind was very revealing...literally. I just have to say this: if you are the slightest bit heavy, that thong under your low rider jeans will make you look frumpy and sleazy. If you're slender, you won't look frumpy...just sleazy. Cracks are for sidewalks, not ladies.

4. Accessories are key if you are dressing simply. The right pair of earrings or scarf can jazz up the plainest outfit. Fortunately, I've always loved scarves, so I have a whole box of them to choose from. My all-time favorite is a beautiful paisley toned scarf in purples, reds, and golds. Its stunning with mossy greens.

5. This is key, girls! Make a list of all the outfits you've tried that you really feel good in. I can't tell you how often I've stumbled out of the shower not knowing or even caring what to wear. One these days its good to pick something off of the list. It's a no-brainer. Sometimes you need no-brainers before your first cup of coffee!

6. While you're making lists, note any additions you'd like to have in your wardrobe. Include anything that would give your outfits pizazz- jewelry, hosiery, shoes, even make-up. Keep the list in your purse. Next trip to the mall you'll be glad you have it. It'll save you from the impulsive urge to buy something that looks great on a mannequin-but doesn't go with a darn thing in your closet.

Chadwicks...these are definitely my colors! Simple jacket and top, printed scarf for interest.

Simple and easy to wear...Chadwicks again. Note the easy white t-shirt that sits lower than the jacket. Scarf rounds it all out.

I don't pretend to be a fashionista, but updating my look a bit has been fun! After all, you're never too old to play dress-up!

A challenge: Divest yourself of 5 useless items

Are you a hoarder of things? Maybe not like those folks on the telly, but tell the truth now...Do you find yourself saying, "I might need that one day" or "I don't really like it, but it was my grandmothers..." or my personal favorite..."I could make something out of that!"

So tell me; what is it that you have the most trouble letting go of? For me, it's books and magazines... stacked and stored in every nook and crannie of this house. Followed by artwork; under every bed. Then there are the shoes, craft supplies, cheap vases, linens and doilies, the hotel soaps and lotions...

One time I heard Dennis Miller, the comedian talking about the blue light specials at K-mart; the buy one, get one free mentality.  I'm paraphrasing here...you can guess his actual words "Two of poop... is still poop."

My goal for today...let go of 5 items I don't really need. I challenge you to do the same.

Get some help for your habit at  http://zenhabits.net/.  Seriously.

P.S. Here's the list of things I'm getting rid of today:
  • 4 old phone books
  •  a beautiful victorian lamp that doesn't match my house
  • a pantsuit that doesn't fit and I've always hated, but it's almost new
  •  a book-to show good faith because books are my most prized and guarded hoard
  •  a pom-pom from a slipper that I threw away yesterday
  • a guest list to my Christmas tea party from 3 years ago
  •  a crystal from a chandelier I no longer have

Fabric Designing on the Web with Spoonflower

Have you visited Spoonflower yet? You can actually DESIGN YOUR OWN FABRIC there. Just think... pillows, tablecloths, curtains, beach bags, aprons...Oh my goodness- I've gotta calm down here. And when you do some photos in a mirror image design, they come out like a kalaidescope...I can't explain it too well; just go try it! You can even sell your designs and get commissioned on the fabric sales. (Probably ought read the fine print before you get into selling your stuff). I think that my sunflower would make gorgeous pillows for a sofa. and the print below would be lovely in silk...Heres the link; http://www.spoonflower.com/ . Have fun!
